cat-d-012Our latest CD provides the following records of the French Chapel Royal, King St., Portman Sq., London.

  • Baptisms 1792-1841 (1148 entries)
  • Marriages 1792-1846 (487 entries)
  • Burials 1794-1801 and 1813-1814 (65 entries).

Records largely relate to French emigrés and their subsequent families. Baptisms are recorded from a number of Hampshire locations as well as in London. The earlier burials are almost all at St Helier, Isle of Jersey, and Winchester, as are many marriages, while those of 1813-14 are at Lymington. Much genealogical data beyond that normally found in such registers is provided.

The originals of these registers are held in the French National Archives at Nantes. A filmstrip copy was given to the Archivist of the Portsmouth Roman Catholic Diocese, and this was lodged for safekeeping and for wider access at the Portsmouth City Archives, located at the Portsmouth History Centre. References are provided to enable copies from the filmstrip to be obtained.

The transcriptions are provided in both date and surname order, in searchable PDF formats. You can purchase a copy by paying with a credit card here.

The MIDLAND CATHOLIC HISTORY SOCIETY was formed in 1996 by the merger of the Staffordshire Catholic History Society and the Worcestershire Catholic History Society. They have a program of events through the year and produce Midland Catholic History which contains articles on post-Reformation Catholic History, of interest to the general reader as well as to historians and antiquarians, and is an essential aid to the local Catholic historian.

You can find more details on their website by following this link.

The library reopens on 22 March. The building’s historic features have been sensitively and carefully restored, bringing the building up to the twenty-first century standards fit for a world class city. This major work will ensure the long-term survival of one of our most iconic and much loved buildings.

Of particular interest to family historians is Archives+ which will offer a showcase and repository for archives and family history. This purpose-built centre will help to satisfy a growing demand for accessible community history and personal heritage.

The English Catholic History Association encourages interest in the Catholic history of England and Wales.  They organise visits to places associated with the Catholic faith, and arrange  conferences on subjects relating to our Catholic history.  They also support research into subjects of Catholic interest and seek to prevent the destruction of Catholic archives.

More details are on their website here. You will also find talks which have been recorded and can be downloaded and listened to.

forlrose03 The Online Parish Clerks project for the County of Lancashire aims to extract and preserve the records from the various parishes and to provide online access to that data, free of charge, along with other data of value to family and local historians conducting research in the County of Lancashire. There are a number of Roman Catholic registers that have been transcribed and are available.

There’s a previous post on this here, Jim has now provided me with an updated list and you can download it as a PDF document: RC Church registers in LancsOPC 20131101

The Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society maintain The Catholic Register Index (CRI) which contains data derived from the registers of a number of Roman Catholic churches in Manchester. The source of this information is the original registers for these churches which have been transcribed by members of the Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society and of the North West Branch of the Catholic Family History Society.

You can view the index here and can search it via this link. At the time of writing this post the index was last updated on 1 November 2013.
