England, war memorials

This site is dedicated to those men and women who fell fighting for their country. Recorded here are various war memorials within a variety of counties, it is fully intended to complete as many war memorials in the United Kingdom as possible. The counties and the war memorials completed for each are listed on a separate page. Photographs have been taken of the majority of the memorials, details of the men included and their photographs where possible.

There are a number of Roman Catholic memorials listed – for example for Staffordshire you can find Breewood St Mary’s and Cotton Roman Catholic College.

Family History Societies, Lancashire, Manchester, registers, useful

There is a great index and search tool from the Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society here, very useful if you are looking for Roman Catholic ancestors in Manchester. The Catholic Register Index (CRI) contains data derived from the registers of a number of Roman Catholic churches in Manchester. The source of this information is the original registers for these churches which have been transcribed by members of the Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society and of the North West Branch of the Catholic Family History Society. Specific information about each source is available here.

The Catholic Family History Society produce this brochure. It is designed for publicity at meetings and face to face events and provides a brief introduction to the society and has the URLs of our various places on the net. Please feel free to pass it on to anyone who might be interested, or print copies for your own use.

Like many societies and clubs these days we suffer from dwindling membership – any publicity is good publicity!

Cheshire, FamilySearch, North West, registers

Thanks to British GENES (British Genealogy News and Events) for bringing this news to my attention

FamilySearch has made a collection of Cheshire Nonconformist records from 1671 to 1900 available.

Nonconformist registers were recorded in volumes of varying size and format. Nonconformist church registers cover approximately 15 percent of England’s population and 80 percent of Wales’ population after 1850.

A Nonconformist church was one that disagreed with the Church of England (Anglican). They may have disagreed with its rites of worship, opposed its authority, or objected to it being heavily supported and subsidized by the government. This group includes Roman Catholics and there are certainly some Catholic records in this collection.

You can search the collection here
